About HarborPaper.org
Updated May 25, 2026
HarborPaper.org is an independent publication focused on the documented history of Canadian ports, Great Lakes shipping, lighthouse preservation, and the coastal communities of Ontario and the broader Great Lakes region. Articles draw on public archival records, federal government documentation, and established secondary sources. All content is for informational purposes only.
What This Publication Covers
The subject matter falls into four general areas:
- Canadian port history — The development, operation, and in some cases decline of commercial harbours on Lakes Ontario, Erie, Huron, and Superior, as well as the connecting waterways.
- Great Lakes shipping — Vessel types, canal infrastructure, cargo flows, and the operators that moved freight through the inland sea system over the past two centuries.
- Lighthouse preservation — The structures that marked hazardous waters and guided commercial navigation, their construction history, and the federal and community efforts to maintain those that survive.
- Coastal community traditions — The fishing, timber, and ferry-route economies that shaped small towns along Ontario's freshwater shorelines, with particular attention to Georgian Bay and the St. Lawrence corridor.
Sources and Standards
Articles on this site are based on publicly available records. Primary sources include the Library and Archives Canada collections relating to the Department of Marine, the Department of Public Works, and the Department of Transport. Secondary sources include peer-reviewed historical scholarship and reports produced by Parks Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, and provincial heritage authorities.
This publication does not invent statistics, attribute quotations without a documented source, or reference organisations that do not exist. Where exact figures are not available in the public record, articles use neutral descriptive language rather than estimates.
